Good for category killer curiosity

If you have a strong interest in brick-and-mortar category-killers (Walmart, Staples, Best Buy, Pet Smart etc.) this book is a great read for you. It brilliantly paints the picture for each of these businesses and explores the challenges each must deal with in the face of the threat from Amazon - and the new reality of retailing in an omni-channel world. A lot of unique and valuable content written from a CEO's perspective (as Jose was the CEO of Stop & Shop Supermarkets). Very insightful thought leadership about the future of retail with many facts, figures and data to support their views. The book is large format - the outside dimensions of a magazine but an inch thick.

About the Author
Randy H. Nelson is a speaker, a coach, a Qualified Entrepreneur, and a former nuclear submarine officer in the U.S. Navy. He co-founded and later sold two market leading, multi-million dollar companies—Orion International and NSTAR Global Services. His proudest achievement, NSTAR, at 10 years and Orion, at 22 years old were awarded #8 and #9, respectively, at the same Fast 50 awards ceremony in the Raleigh, NC area. Randy now runs Gold Dolphins, LLC, a coaching and consulting firm to help entrepreneurial leaders and CEO’s become Qualified Entrepreneurs and achieve their maximum potential. Randy has a B.S. in Accounting from Miami University and was awarded the Admiral Sidney W. Souers Distinguished Alumni Award at his alma mater in 2011. Randy and his wife, Kristi, reside in North Carolina and are the proud parents of six children and four grandsons.

An Essential Self-Awareness Tool for Entrepreneurs, Leaders and Visionaries

A must-read for visionaries in business, whether just beginning your entrepreneurial journey or a seasoned veteran with many successful ventures. I work with company leaders across a number of industries – not everyone who has the vision and drive to build a business has the perspective, self-awareness and know-how to run and sustain that company. I will recommend this book to all of them.

I’m impressed with the assessment and analysis approach to leadership that Randy uses. Each chapter is rich with insight to help the reader understand his or her own leadership style and gain perspective and self-awareness to allow them to become a better, more well-rounded and highly functioning leader. Each also ends with a self-assessment tool – a “Qual Card” – to help measure the reader’s progress and commitment.

The Second Decision is a well written, fast-paced read. The author knows his audience – no wasted time here – and makes the material accessible, meaningful and consequential.

As a former YPO member and avid EO supporter, I recommend reading Randy's book -- "The Second Decision …the QUALIFIED Entrepreneur"! He hits the nail on the head addressing the unspoken truth that is needed to successfully make the transition from entrepreneur hyped-on-growth to a real CEO and leader focused on value creation. A must read as you think about your and your company's next stage of growth.

As a business owner for over 25 years, I've read dozens of business books. Few share the depth of insight and applicable knowledge that Second Decision does. It speaks to the heart of what it takes to be a successful founder/business owner. I'd highly recommend this read.

About the Author
I started my career at United Parcel Service, a long time ago. After little more than getting my feet wet in the Logistics industry I moved quickly into manufacturing. This is where I found my passion! Seeing raw materials coming in one end, going through various transformations, and seeing finished goods come out the other end is exciting for me. I have been described as a manufacturing nerd, I get so excited about it. I have been responsible for setting up manufacturing lines that produced things like windows that were installed in Willoughby Tower in Chicago, the ignition switch used in various Honda cars, wiring harnesses used in Toyota and Honda cars, and more. My knowledge of Project Management stems from having run projects like creating the department that manufactured the ignition switches for the Honda Accord and Civic. I had four bare walls, and a looming deadline when I took that one over. Not only did I get the air filters in place, the machinery installed, hired and trained a full staff, and got the line up and running but I also reconfigured the ERP as a side project to reduce manufacturing variances by over 67%. I also set up the line to produce the parts using 42-1/2 less man hours than Honda was using! Coming in under budget and finishing on time is what I do! A good bit of my success also stems from an easy familiarity with computers. I had been the IT Manager for a Japanese owned spring manufacturer for many years. This is where my facility with MRP/ERP configuration comes from.

Excellent Guide for Non-Project Managers and Nice Review for Experienced Project Managers!

This book was written to help anybody who finds themselves in a situation where they may need to propose or manage a project, especially in small to mid-size companies where there may be no formal project management discipline or PMO for support. As a project manager with experience in large organizations, the book was a great review of the basics and provided me with some key insights and reminders of why we should be proposing and executing projects in the first place.

The book is an easy read. It includes practical tips and even some project management jargon to help you get started on your project. The author then provides some insights to help you get started with your Project Charter, Project Scope Statement, and the Project Management Plan.

The three things I liked most about this book were:

1. The tips on how to pick a project that will positively impact and organization.

2. The tips on how to justify your project to your executives.

3. The description of the documents that will give you the best chances to successfully complete your project.

I recommend this book to anyone who needs help getting started with the proposal or execution of a project.

An excellent book ... I found the book insightful, well substantiated and interesting to read ... takes into account key aspects of leadership which are effective and inspiring; namely being merciful, responsible, humble and leading from the heart ... To get the most out of the book, treat it as a workbook for stimulating regular journaling on this topic since there are apt questions at the end of each chapter. I found the questions very soul searching and transformative, and I think they are one of the greatest strengths of the book.

Bravo! Well written, inspiring, and heart-felt book that eloquently links business and compassion

Bias Disclosure: I have been a colleague in arms as a fellow Army officer with the author, Rob Goodson, and a friend for many years. And, I read a draft version of this book before it was published. I am so glad that Rob decided to follow through with his intention to put in words what I know he practices as a person and a leader.

My Review: For me, the book is a reflection of the man who wrote it, as much as it a wonderful opportunity to make a case for the foundational element of great leadership...mercy. Rob points out that this word, to some, is somewhat out of context in the business world. But I believe that Rob makes an eloquent case that leaders around the world would do themselves (and the people they work with) a great service by embracing a bit more mercy. I'm glad Rob makes this link between business and mercy. Business is just people relating to each other, right? Why wouldn't you care for the people with whom you do business and help your business grow? Read the book and you'll understand why Rob writes, "there is indeed a place for mercy and compassion in business; and not only is there a place for such leadership, but that it can lead to a successful, profitable business."

The heart of Tasmania

Anyone wanting to understand Tasmanian history over the past 25 years and the central role of politics and the forest industry in that history must read this book. A classic story of hubris, ego and greed, and its terrible impact on a small island State. Gunns the company may be gone but the power and culture remain. Tasmania and it's forest industry still have many years of conflict to look forward too.

Gunns Ltd was once the largest employer in Tasmania. With a market value of $1 billion, and most of its profits coming from woodchipping, Gunns had expansion plans. Those plans required a pulp mill, which Gunns wanted to locate in the Tamar Valley – a tourist haven and home of many fine wineries. But the pulp mill did not proceed, Gunns collapsed in 2012, and CEO John Gay was arrested for insider trading. What went wrong?

To understand the rise and fall of Gunns, it’s necessary to understand the importance of economic development to Tasmanian politics. And to appreciate Tasmania’s unique position (in terms of representation) in the Australian Commonwealth. Federal elections can be won or lost in Tasmania.

‘Both of these strands of Tasmania –the remnant parochial, insular culture and its authoritarian politics – need to be understood and addressed for Tasmania to progress.’

Since the late nineteenth century, Tasmania has been searching for economic development. During my childhood in Tasmania, the Hydro-Electric Commission (the HEC) was focussed on damming almost every river on the island in the hope that cheap hydroelectricity would bring industry to the island.

But, by the 1970s things were starting to change. Increased environmental awareness was growing in Tasmania. Lake Pedder may have been flooded in 1972, but damming the Franklin River in the 1980s was a much more difficult proposition. And today, over thirty years later, there are many Tasmanians who believe that preventing the damming the Franklin was a tragedy.

This, then, is some of the background to the rise of Gunns. Many Tasmanians believe that increased industry is necessary for Tasmania to thrive. A number of those Tasmanians see the damming of rivers and the destruction of old growth forest as necessary sacrifices to progress. Within the Tasmanian community, it is an issue that polarises and divides communities and families.

By the way, the company Gunns was founded in 1875 by brothers John and Thomas Gunn as J&T Gunn. J&T Gunn was once a building business which built many notable buildings in northern Tasmania. One of my favourites is Launceston’s Customs House.

In this book, Quentin Beresford analyses the Gunns empire and its relationship with government. This is a case study in corruption and abuse of power, of ineffective governance and populist government. What has Tasmania (and the Commonwealth of Australia) learned from this experience? Could it happen again?

evernote organization

Evernote is the place that I've been using to organize my life lately. I heard about how great it was and decided to download the app and from there I was sold. I enjoy the features the come with it. I had to get this book because I had to see what other powers I had at my fingertips with this awesome program. This book was very informational and walked you through step by step how to do different things in Evernote that will make your life more organized and productive. They even have images to help you through the entire process. I learned a lot about how to organize different folders, share info, and schedule tasks in Evernote from this book, I'm glad I bought it.

How to make your current career more rewarding and enjoyable.

For years Kerry has written best selling books about career transitions. But not everyone is situated to make a major move. And so with this book she has shifted gears. If you expect to be in your current job for a while, but want to enjoy it more, and get more from it, this book is for you. It's a readable, accessible guide for the journey to a more rewarding, engaging work life.

Chock-full of ideas, suggestions, and food-for-thought, Love Your Job is a very positive and powerful guide, at least it was for me. I very highly recommend it.

Great book if you have job burnout!

I started to dread going to work everyday and found this book. It is more geared toward the office setting, but it still worked for me. I am not in a position to leave my current job and couldn't find anything good in it anymore. I am half way through this book and already am reminded of all the good reasons why I took this position in the first place. The book not only has advice but also exercises to do. It is an easy read and very interesting. I would recommend it to anyone that is not happy in their current job. It definately would be worth reading and might actually make you more happy and peaceful. It did for me.
