About the Author
Paul O'Brien is a visionary entrepreneur who invented a new category of software in 1989, which evolved to become the world's largest astrology and divination website. A Fascinating Book on Accessing Intuition to Guide Bold, Visionary, Life-Changing Decisions

Great Decisions, Perfect Timing: Cultivating Intuitive Intelligence by Paul O’Brien is a fascinating book about visionary & strategic decision making. Having worked in a corporate environment for most of my professional life, I am well aware of how strategic decisions are normally made. The author goes well beyond the logical strategic decision making techniques advocated in MBA courses, exploring how to leverage intuitive intelligence to improve on complex and difficult decisions – calling his approach the Visionary Decision Making (VDM) process.
The VDM process is designed to help you make bold or life-changing moves on what you love … on what fascinates your spirit ... guiding you to go after what really matters to you. This process is based on the theories and work of Carl Jung, a twentieth century psychologist who believed many of our decisions are made from tapping knowledge and resources available from our unconscious. The book describes Jung’s Synchronicity Principle, the value of invoking Archetypes, and the concept and value of tapping the collective unconscious or Infinite Intelligence.
The author incorporates tools from Eastern cultures to help access the resources available from our unconscious to stimulate intuition, helping us to think outside the box. This book describes I Ching, or Book of Changes in a way that is meaningful and understandable to those of us from Western cultures. I Ching is a sophisticated divination system that helps to make better decisions and improve timing. I was fascinated by how I Ching provides 64 different perspectives that help reflect on situations and relationships in new and different ways, deepening the quality of decisions being considered.

Decisions are something we all have to deal with on a daily basis. Some are easier to come by than others. Choices are made that impact our lives and sometimes change the direction what we started out in and veer us on a different path. Deciding whether to have coffee or tea is not really difficult. What to wear to work not that hard either as these types of simple decisions are ones that do not require thinking, just happen and often without “much consequence.” Tactical Decisions have to do with, “ the different ways that we implement a strategy but it’s the strategic decision that alter the direction of a person’s life or business and determine its future.” With the Internet and the information at our fingertips many of us use this powerful resource to help us make decisions. The author continues by discussing how we often make bad decisions, choices and why fear, anxiety or over eagerness or fatigue can come into play when making decisions. “How can we tell good information from bad?” Good question! “ What information can we trust?”
The primary focus of this book deals with The Visionary Decision Making process which as the author states and I quote: “ is a way to consciously resolve major-choice pints and dilemmas that can come your way, and make gold decisions tat are in alignment with who you really are.” It requires the “ interplay of intuition and logic which is a mix of imagination and introspection. The author continues by stating that life can be divided into three stages, which is quite interesting. I guess most of us would not separate our first thirty years into the first stage of our lives, which includes self-discovery, experimenting and trying things, and what fascinates you. The next thirty years or stage 2 is called the builder stage, develop mastery and provide for yourself. The third stage for those 60 and over is the Patron stage, mentoring and teaching and supporting collective good. These three stages are described fully in pages 26- 44. Chapter three is titled The Psychology of Perfect Timing and the author introduces the synchronicity principle which can be defined as: “ the coincidence of two or more events that are not related by cause and effect, but which occur together in a meaningful way, even though the connection may seem mysterious to us.” However, in a sense the author says it is a meaningful coincidence partly because it shakes us up. In the VDM paradigm, most would take this seriously as something important is about to occur. The author gives examples and goes into this in depth in chapter three.
Including information about intuitive intelligence and how it enhances and aids us when faced with difficult choices or decisions by using what he called the Visionary Decision Making Process. A vision is strategic if is it based the author states on what is important to you as in individual at this state in your life.” The vision can lead to a strategic goal. A strategic vision and goal you are committed to will require that he refers to as “Visionary decisions which are tooted within the depths of our being. They are deeply rooted in the depths of your “being,” and are an active expression of which you have found or discovered yourself to be. In order to fully comprehend the VDM process he continues with the Setting your Intention, The Power of Logic and Intuition defining all three and incorporating how they meld or blend into this process in detail.
As you begin to understand VDM you need to learn how logic supports the process of strategic decision making by testing and reaffirming highest priorities. Next, sacrificing a lesser for the greater, helping strong emotions to calm down, enlarging the scope of your options and storing and comparing your two or three better options. Followed by A Better Logical Process where the author uses a realistic example of applying this to a major decision such as finding the right place to live, renting, house sitting or buying. Intuitive Intelligence is expanded on in Chapter 6 and Invoking Archetypes Chapter 7 and the chapter that I found most enlightening: Execution and Timing Chapter 9. Asking questions such as “What is the Best move to make? The four steps to implementing VDM are: determining what is the best next action you can take. Second, committing to that action, next deciding when to make your move and finally executing your decision by moving forward confidently, without looking back or second-guessing yourself.” The VDM Meeting Technique and the many different things you need to focus on are described in detail in this chapter.
Talking about the many different cultures that will help readers available themselves of the resources needed. Using your unconscious at times to help rouse your intuition. He includes information about I Ching and Carl Jung that I will leave for the reader to learn more about on your own. Belief Engineering in Chapter 11 focuses on Values of Beliefs, believing your intuition and how we adopt beliefs.
The Synchronistic Lifestyle is as the author states “Central to the Visionary Decision Making paradigm. This principle “enhances our understanding of how intuitive intelligence operates.” Being aware of this type of lifestyle is the “marker of higher awareness of good timing and a sense of getting in the flow of life. Intuitive intelligence will benefit from paying attention to the little miracles that come about in the form of synchronicities, dreams and hunches. Continuing by explaining Miracle Mindedness, making life a game you win more often, the benefits of this lifestyle that helps creative inspiration, confidence, contentment, wisdom and grace round out this chapter. The Role of Destiny and adding in the final appendix a valuable resource to help everyone understand the VDM practices as they pertain to each chapter within this book. For example: Tracking Synchronicities by creating a journal that will help you take full advance of “signs that the universe provides.” Within Appendix A: you will learn more about different exercises you can use to understand what is presented within this very informative and valuable resource. I tried the exercise on page 219: Mindfullness of Body and found that the strategy not only work gut helped me understand my response to information and settled me down. So, I am going to keep this book close by. I am going to reread many parts and chapters and try the many exercises in order to fully appreciate and understand what Paul O’Brien has shared with readers.
