General Manager's Guide to Financial Management

The heart and soul of this book is the financial side of business and I found the chapters and the Appendix materials to be excellent. The author does a wonderful job of explaining the statements, their preparation and interpretation. The case example does a great job of tying the materials together as one works thru the various statements and their analyses. This would be the ideal reference for many business leaders and it could be a life-saver for individuals who suddenly become CEO or president and for the first time must understand and direct the financial side of an enterprise: think of the son or daughter who inherits the leadership of a family firm without much experience or the line executive who becomes a business unit head with little previous exposure to financial matters.
Chapters 4-15 are a wonderful and concise explanation of what every general manager must know and understand about how to run a business successfully with the numbers. The opening chapters on "Leadership Traits" and "Keys to Perpetual Profitability" are a big bonus. Those insights only comes from experience and the author has captured what every business leader should know and should be doing.
What separates this book from others I’ve read (and written) is that the autor shows the reader how to use these statements to manage. There is as at least as much leadership and general management here as there is accounting. The chapter on Capital budgeting explains the calculations for CAPEX but also reccomends minimum returns - and why. You won’t find that in any other book.

Valuable Resource for Business Owners - A Must Read!

Lead to Succeed is an excellent single-source book! Much of what the author writes about can be found in other books, but it will take numerous books to cover what he teaches. Even so, who has the time? The author has an amazing talent for being succinct: he gets to the point, make his point in an easy to understand manner, and simplifies hard-to-understand concepts. He also takes numerous concepts and brings them together in a complete insightful package where I found myself saying many times, “Wow, that really makes a lot of sense” or “That is valuable!” The author states, “Financial management does not have to be either mysterious or complicated, but you need to know where to begin and take it on a step-by-step basis. You must be able to make sense out of the multitude of numbers and mysterious jargon that accountants and other financial people throw at you.” As a financial professional (MBA & CPA), and a two-location business owner for over 20 years, I’ll say that Lead to Succeed is an excellent easy-to-read and succinct resource for the non-financial business owner, as well as the financial professional. This book is a valuable resource and is a must read for anyone running a business!

Your Must-Have Business Book

I highly recommend this book to ANY entrepreneur who either 1) thinks he/she knows everything, or 2) knows he/she doesn't know everything but is afraid to ask, or 3) knows that learning is a never-ending process.
Dave Duryee knows how to talk business in a way that makes sense - and can improve your bottom line. I literally found it hard to put this book down since I found it easy to read, easy to understand and, most importantly, easy to implement in my own company. And now I can take the concepts I've learned and teach them to my employees.
Do yourself a favor and buy this book - it truly is worth the investment.
