Good God, it's a good guide!

As an overview it is interesting. It is difficult to distill a complex subject like insurance down to just a few pages - just as it would be to reduce the law and the knowledge of an attorney down to a few hundred pages. Many claim situations are unique and require specific details to analyze properly. While you might rely on general observations from this book, it was published in 1999 and insurance policy wording does change over time.

I really wasn’t aware of so much data surrounding the problem and bringing it to my attention has really helped me. Timely and well conceived, this is a book that many will be able to learn from. Well worth the read.

I am a huge fan of e-books however, I think this is one of those books that I might actually want a hard copy of, to highlight, make notes in, and keep with my financial planning paperwork for easy reference when planning. I also believe this book would be most beneficial in non-profit organizations, to provide to potential donors.
The book is a quick read (under 1.5 hours) and was well written (grammatically) but as an e-book, this needs some formatting tweaks. There were instances where words were merged together and times when the picture was behind the words which made it a little challenging to read.
I appreciated that this book was written in layman terms however, I found it to be pretty repetitive when it came to reviewing the benefits of donating to a charity. Almost every method of donation resulted in the benefit to a charity of “aids a charity in reaching philanthropic humanitarian goals”… I can’t imagine any donation that doesn’t have that benefit. Now other benefits per specific type of donation were insightful and really helped one understand why they might want to donate one way versus the other depending on their end goal. I think donor’s wills appreciate the sections that list the benefits to the donor more so than the benefits to a charity, but again, both offer interesting insight…and who knew there were so many ways to donate to a charity! I appreciated the bulleted layout, it made the book easy to follow and understand. Overall worth the read!

After reading the book, it becomes the digital equal to a speedy pocket reference that allows you to quickly navigate to just the right information, properly explained and eloquently told.
As baby boomers start the process of transferring their assets to the next generation, it is becoming overwhelming how much we all want to make a difference. So, when you want to maximize your assets to make the most difference, read the book. It will optimize your assets.

Illustrations, not content, disappoint

Content of publication is helpful, although I question the "packaging" in which it is presented. For information of this nature, is it really necessary to accompany the content with cartoon-like illustrations? I would look to a publisher like Nolo Press for guidance as to what might have been more appropriate for this self-published book.

Start on the farm

Review: Building Miraculous Work Teams, by Duke Nielson

This book has two parts: first, a working biography of Duke Nielson from age 6 to 80. The lessons in the second part of the book were learned on the farm, mostly, and in several business jobs Duke has had. The heart of the book is a “how to do it” guide for upgrading the working culture of today from an 18th century “command and control” model (Prussian Army, railroads and steel mills) to the 21st century: working as a team of adults, just like the young men did on the farm in Duke’s early life.
The controlling word in business today is “obey”, do what you are told, period. That’s how to make work a boring, maddening experience; its way too common and the reason behind the gross dissatisfaction of workers, something around 75% or more. The result: all the behavioral maladies of men and women so well known in the medical world, the “cures” for which are well advertized on TV. The real cure is to change the working environment that recognizes our basic desires to work as a team of adults, warts and all.
Duke cleverly characterizes that change as a shift from WF to WW, work for, to work with. It’s a simple idea; you don’t need an MBA to get it, or do it. Half the book is a workbook so, almost anyone who can read can do it well and make a change in her/his business culture by implementing the shift from WF to WW. Productivity and worker satisfaction increase, and best of all, so do profits. The sausage maker, Johnsonville, was a small regional firm, faced with competition from large national firms. They had a choice: become a national firm, or risk the whole business. They enlisted the inputs and support of the factory workers to make the shift to a national firm. This book has given our organization a totally different way of looking at how we work with our teams. The concepts presented turn the old supervision theories, especially in terms of performance reviews, upside down. Definitely worth a read.

Brave is the right title for this fine book by Margie Warrell.

At the end of her book, Brave, Margie Warrell tells us that she is well aware of her limitations as a writer, but if she waited until she had a Shakespearean command of the language, she would never write anything. She says, "And so I swallow my fear of falling short, embrace my vulnerability and continue typing ... reminding myself ... that done is better than perfect."

Margie has nothing to worry about. She is a fine writer and a good story teller. But so much more important than her writing skills is what she has to say and what she has to say is well worth reading - five stars worth in my opinion.

Margie tells us if we ask people about their biggest regret they would say: "I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me." That statement represents well what Margie's book is all about - helping us "step boldly in the direction of our dreams." To help us on our way she gives us fifty chapters and "50 every day acts of courage to thrive in work, love, and life."

In all fifty chapters Margie starts out with a theme for the chapter such as Focus on what You Want. Then she gives us a bit of biographical information about herself and her own understanding of this theme. From this point she provides sound words of wisdom such as "Energy flows where attention goes. Don't be an accomplice in your own misery." In each chapter she includes practice for her readers in a segment called Train the Brave. And lastly she often gives us a quote from the great masters who have much advice and counsel to give us on what it means to be Brave. For example, in this chapter the famous stoic philosopher Epictetus tells us to "First say to yourself what you would be, and then do what you have to do."

Brave is divided into five parts: 1. Live Purposefully; 2. Speak Bravely; 3. Work Passionately; 4. Dig Deep; and 5. Dare Boldly. I found much to like and learn from in each section of her book. This is not to say that Brave is perfect; it's not. I think Margie would be the first to agree with this statement, but remember what she says up front - Done is better than perfect! One example should suffice for the reader of this review. Margie tells us "that everything works out in the end." Sadly for Margie, what works out often has disastrous consequences as when her brother Peter killed himself after a life filled with sickness and suffering. Everything did not work out for Peter and many of us could give Margie similar examples where we simply can't explain or understand the suffering of those near and dear to us.

I, for one, don't need for Margie to be perfect. She is more than good enough just as she is. She lives with her own fears and is often tested to apply her words of wisdom to her own life. She is down in the trenches with the rest of us. She is someone we would all like to know, and better than that, have as a friend. Margie would be the first one to tell us how important it is to have a friend, someone who wants nothing but the best for us and who asks nothing in return. Margie would call this kind of friendship "paying it forward," and by that she means that the good that comes from this friendship lives on in the future, karma that never stops influencing the lives of others for good. As George Eliot tells us in Middlemarch, this type of friendship is like a stone thrown in the middle of a small pond; we see the waves radiate out to the farthest shore - such is the impact of the small acts of kindness of a true friend.

If you buy Margie's book, I don't think you will be disappointed.

Part 1 is foundational. You should read part one in its entirety. It contains 10 essays on how to live your life on purpose. After that, the book can be read in any order. These lessons after part one do not necessarily build on each other in sequential order. They are all important and present a philosophy for living a purposeful life and understanding how fears pop up in all phases of our lives. Each essay deals with ways to act with bravery. At the end of each essay is a short “Train the Brave” text box with a short note on how to implement the lesson.
Ms. Warrell offers additional resources on her website that will help the reader learn to take action in the face of fear.

She writes in a very conversational style. She is from Australia so be warned that you will come across quite a few words that are spelled slightly different from the American spelling. About the Author

Andrea DeBruin-Parecki is nationally recognized for her work in the field of family literacy. She developed the Adult–Child Interactive Reading Inventory (ACIRI), a reliable and valid tool that measures the interactive reading skills of an adult and a child during storybook reading (available from Paul H. Brookes Publishing Co.). She has designed family literacy programs and has acted as a consultant across the country. In addition to the ACIRI, she created the Early Literacy Skills Assessment, a comprehensive, reliable, and valid tool in the form of a children's storybook that measures phonological awareness, the alphabetic principle, comprehension, and concepts about print. She has expertise in the areas of emergent literacy, assessment, literacy within at-risk and minority populations, and the motivation of at-risk populations. She was a Fulbright Senior Specialist in Guatemala. Her work related to literacy development in young children and families has been published and presented at national, regional, and state conferences.

Dr. van Kleeck's research focuses on language and emerging literacy skills in children who are language impaired as well as the broader group of children who are at risk academically. Some specific areas of interests include (a) parents’ language socialization processes in the home that provide their young children with foundations for later literacy and academic success, and (b) issues related to language assessment in the preschool population. Her most recent work focuses on what she refers to as the academic talk register in preschoolers, and it’s importance to later academic achievement. Dr. van Kleeck’s previous publications include several edited books, nearly 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, and 25 book chapters. She has given several hundred invited and peer-reviewed presentations nationally and internationally.

Dr. Gear teaches special education core courses: educational and diagnostic assessment, instructional methods, individual education programming, directed field experience, collaboration, and transitions. Before teaching at ODU, she taught diverse learners in grades PreK-12th, general and special education in public school, treatment programs, home-based instruction, as well as adult basic education. She has authored and co-authored book chapters and articles; presented at international, national, and regional conferences; is a member of the Council for Exceptional Children, including special interest divisions, and a member of the National Head Start Association. She is a reviewer for the National Head Start Association Dialog. She is a contributing author and researcher for the Virginia Early Childhood Policy Center, and the Teacher Immersion Residency Program at ODU. Her research goals include teacher and parent education to improve outcomes for children with disabilities.

Susan B. Neuman, Ed.D., is a professor in educational studies specializing in early literacy development. Previously, she directed the Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement. Her research and teaching interests include early childhood policy, curriculum, and early reading instruction from prekindergarten to Grade 3. In her role as Assistant Secretary, she established the Reading First program and the Early Reading First program and was responsible for the implementation of all activities in Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Act.

Dr. Barrueco is Assistant Professor of Psychology and Fellow of the Institute for Policy Research & Catholic Studies at The Catholic University of America. Dr. Barrueco specializes in the prevention and early intervention of developmental difficulties, particularly among language-minority, immigrant, and migrant children. Much of her grant-funded research has focused on early bilingual, socioemotional, and acculturative processes within the Latino community.

Throughout her training and career, Dr. Barrueco has been dedicated to learning and utilizing advanced statistics to advance scientific knowledge and practice with young immigrant children and families. This approach is rooted in a community-based participatory research framework involving strong collaborations with families and the local and national programs that serve them. This is reflected in her involvement in local and national studies with Head Start, Early Head Start, and Migrant and Seasonal Head Start as well as her appointments as Board Vice Chair of the DC Bilingual Public Charter School and on the Advisory Committee of the American Psychological Association Presidential Task Force on Immigration.

Michael Coyne is a professor of special education in the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut. He is also a research scientist at the Center for Behavioral Education and Research. His research focuses on beginning reading and early vocabulary instruction and intervention, school-based experimental research, multitiered or response to intervention systems of support, and effective practices for students with learning disabilities.

After 5 years of experience teaching in elementary schools in the Philadelphia area, David K. Dickinson, Ed.D., attended the Harvard Graduate School of Education and then served as Director of Teacher Education at the Child Study Department at Tufts University and joined the Education Department at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he received tenure. He moved to the Education Development Center (EDC) in 1994 to join the team that developed the Early Childhood Generalist certificate for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. In 1995 he established the New England Research Center on Head Start Quality, which examined the impact of Head Start on children's language and literacy development and on families, with special attention to the development of children whose first language is Spanish. He and Catherine Snow received the initial funding that launched the Home-School Study of Language and Literacy Development in 1987, and he directed the school portion of the study during the preschool years. Drawing on early results from this study, he and colleagues at EDC developed the Literacy Environment Enrichment Project, an approach to helping preschool teachers and their supervisors adopt more effective practices to support children's language and literacy. He and others at EDC are developing and researching a version of this program that will be delivered using the Internet in combination with interactive television. His work has been published in numerous articles, and he has edited two other books, Bridges to Literacy: Children, Families and Schools (Blackwell, 1994) and Handbook of Early Literacy Research (co-edited with Susan Neuman, Guilford Press, 2001). He and Miriam W. Smith are co-authors (with Angela Sangeorge & Louisa Anastasopoulos) of the Early Language and Literacy Classroom Observation Toolkit, Research Edition (Paul H. Brookes Publishing Co., 2002), a set of tools for evaluating the quality of literacy support in early childhood classrooms.

Roberta Michnick Golinkoff, Ph.D., H. Rodney Sharp Professor, School of Education, University of Delaware, Newark, Delaware 19716. Dr. Golinkoff conducts research in language acquisition, children's knowledge of geometric forms, and playful learning. Among her awards are a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, the Urie Bronfenbrenner Award for Lifetime Contribution to Developmental Psychology, and the Francis Alison award-the highest prize given to faculty at the University of Delaware. She is the author of 12 books and numerous journal articles and is committed to the dissemination of developmental science.
