Good introduction to the stock market

Stocks: The Learners' Guide on How to Invest in the Day to Day Stock Market is not going to bring you truckloads of money driving up your driveway any time soon, but what it does is give you an introduction to the to the very volatile and seductive stock market where fortunes are made daily and oft times lost over night. When we think of the stock market we think of Wall Street, London, Beijing and a few other big time cities where cash is plenty and players are a dime a dozen. We've seen the movies, we tune in to the nightly shows about how major players make the big bucks. It takes nerves of steel you need to play this game. ... or does it.

Daniel stresses that emotion has no place in the stock market. It i all math and logic and research. We tend to think that playing the stock market is a rich man's game - and it is to a certain point, but it is also a good playing field for ordinary every day people who have built up some smarts in the market and make money making wise decisions. There are plenty of people playing the market - many are just like you and me, working in a day job and making a few dollars on the side in the to help grow our asset base. That base can be a very lucrative source of your wealth.

I like the easy style that this book is written in. Daniel pulls no punches. Play to your own financial comfort - i.e., don't bet the farm on the market. Yes do take risks, but only risks that if they turn against you, it won't change your day to day living. I like the advice that you should know the companies and the stocks that you are buying, the litmus test being that if you can't answer pertinent questions about a stock then you shouldn't buy it.

Good read. Recommended for anyone who wants to have at least an understanding of the basics in stock trading. This is not a course. You will not make a fortune from this book. You will gain a who new perspective and appreciation for how the money travels and grows or shrinks.

All-in-all, great read and super resource. Buy it!

It's hard to put a point on what I like about this book—so much good information that it's hard to comment on one chapter. If I had to choose, I'd say, as an author myself, that her sections on creating a book series of small digestible and very focused topics of value is may favorite. That being said, working with VA's, social media how-to's, and offloading your minutia are subjects and suggestions after my own heart. Not a page of it I wouldn't read again and reference. Links to what she talks about, clear concise information, and a voice that speaks from experience not theory. All-in-all, great read and super resource. Buy it! My mantra, “Put the ‘how’ back in ‘how-to’. ” Mrs. Cartwright is in danger of hijacking that from me.

Solid, actionable advice!

Solid, actionable advice! I've tried and made plans for video work (I find it best fit for me and less "noisy" than blogging!). Coupling that with some social media work for distribution. The author gives a ton of great ideas here. It's very helpful in considering what makes most sense for you, your business, and your clients. Saves a lot of pains of trial-and-error and/or analysis paralysis!

Easiest to Understand Book on Branding I've Ever Read!

Just finished reading this. I work with clients every day who are trying to brand themselves—picking colors, deciding on a logo, figuring out what they're actually doing. I don't do any of this part for them. I just build the logo or website according to their instructions. And sometimes I shudder a little at what they come up with. I'm going to start recommending this book to all my clients. Build Your Brand is the easiest to understand book on branding I've ever read. The branding pyramid is awesome. I also liked that the author gives several recognizable examples for all of the concepts.

Sharp, Witty, and Highly Informative Guide to Branding

Pratt's writing is clear, concise, entertaining, and really throughtful. She challenges the reader to analyze their branding needs for themeselves and gives specific, detailed instructions on how to most effectively do that. She gives excellent examples of current and longstanding advertising giants, while also pointing out advertising campaigns that haven't worked, and why. Her instruction is easy to understand, and her voice is authoritative without being condescending. I would recommend Step-by-Step guide to Anyone who has a business or nonprofit or is thinking about starting one.

Took my company branding to a whole new dimension

I received this book as part of a promotion, and I'm glad I did! The logical advice and concise examples that Sheralyn Pratt give have been tremendously helpful to my business. I ended up rebranding my company with an eye toward the branding pyramid shown in this book, and the results were measurable and incredible! My company's SEO is so much better! And it went from me peddling myself to different companies to me managing six employees and being consistently triple booked.
This book has given me the ability to identify my company identity and what sets me apart from my competitors. And it does all this without taking up a lot of my time with pointless examples and vague principles. Everything in here is relevant, justified, and effective.

Ace that interview with this book

An interview can make or break an application. I may not be working in a company right now, but I did so before so I know how important interviews are in getting a job. This book will come in handy for people who do not know how to handle an interview. The covers a lot from job application preparation up to the part after the interview. The writing style of the author is also very light in such a way that you will not feel bored reading it. It's just like talking to a well-experienced person.

You can be the most qualified and be the leading candidate for a job to have it slip through your fingers simply because you are untrained in how to handle the job interview. It's the most important part of the job hiring process yet its the one area we do the least to prepare for. About the Author

Joseph Coleman has been a journalist for more than two decades, spending most of that time as a foreign correspondent for Associated Press, including 11 years in Japan. He's reported from more than 20 countries throughout Asia, Europe, and Latin America, covering stories ranging from the Colombian government's battle with the Medellin drug cartel to the Kobe earthquake, the Asian tsunami, and global warming. A graduate of Vassar College and Columbia University, Coleman is the Roy W. Howard Professor of Practice in the Indiana University Media School.

News that America and many other countries face a demographic time bomb is not news. However the problems facing an ever-aging population in the world, already depressed by a global economic crisis and technological change seemingly is less in focus. This book seeks to change this.

What a fascinating read! The author has certainly crammed a lot of great information into a relatively small, well researched, academically sound book. Politicians and leaders of companies should read this and start to engage their brain cells. Older workers are not going to go away in a hurry, structural change is necessary. Yet different approaches taken from around the world might help mitigate the problem, even if they cannot entirely solve it. Standing still and doing nothing is no option in any case.

This book is U.S.-centric although it does draw in experiences from around the world. Yet the problems are not restricted to one country. Some countries have a little more breathing space before their own demographic time bomb explodes; many others are not so fortunate. The author has looked at other countries to see how they are handling their own demographic problems. A mixture of cultures, backed up with portraits of many older workers really brings matters into focus. Improving conditions for older workers is critical for ensuring individual success and prosperity and that, of course, in turn will impact society. Something has to be done!

The book astutely records that older employees and job seekers increasingly feel that their age is being held against them. This is undeniable. A job market that fails to take full advantage of their talents frustrates trained and energetic older workers and, naturally, the younger workforce is also disenfranchised. The older generation have so much to give, both to society but also to the next generation of workers. Both groups need each other.

Reading the following paragraph really highlights the situation we are in today and how we got there: “Two powerful engines are behind the aging trend. One is the unprecedented extension of lifetimes in the 20th century, abetted by the dramatic reduction in infant mortality, particularly in the industrialized countries of Europe, North America and East Asia. Between 1970 and 2010, global male life expectancy soared from 56.4 years to 67.5 years, a gain of more than 11 years, according to the Global Burden of Disease Study 2010, published in The Lancet, a leading medical journal. Women gained even more, increasing from 61.2 to 73.3 in the same time frame. Lifetimes in industrialized countries far outstrip those global aver-ages, reaching their pinnacle in Japan, where women live until they're 86, men until they're 80. What that means, simply, is more old people. And this is a great achievement; as never before, the average citizen in wealthy nations—and even not-so-wealthy nations.”

Many believe that researchers have drastically underestimated or underappreciated the scope of the problem. Can things get worse? Possibly, who has considered China? As the book notes: “In a generation - or perhaps less than a generation - the burgeoning economies of China and India will face their own quandaries of aging and work. Thanks largely to its one-child policy, China risks becoming the first major economy in modern times to become old before it becomes rich, with potential consequences for the global economy.”

This reviewer is neither young nor old: a balanced 40-something. Yet so many of the problems being described are not unfamiliar or far-fetched, irrespective of the country you are based in. Take the description of a worker: “He had two major strikes against him as he ventured out into the job market for the first time in more than a decade. First, he had never gone to college. As many in the United States in the Great Recession have found, that fact alone would exclude him from many jobs, and those without a university degree have a higher unemployment rate than college grads.” Of course, the younger group of jobseekers, armed with degrees and student debt, complain about the lack of opportunities, the lack of experience and often “degree inflation” where many jobs that previously didn’t demand and probably don’t need a degree-level education now routinely do so.

How did society as a whole get into this mess? It is more than a question of demographics.

Despite this book being clearly aimed at an academic, professional audience – with a mass of bibliographic references and notes at its disposal – it still manages to tug at the heartstrings and get the reader really thinking about things. The experiences taken from around the world add a lot of colour and value to the central argument and it is interesting to note the different approaches being taken to try and solve the problem. Some of the changes may be transplantable into other countries with relative ease. Some, however, might need political and cultural shifts and could that be a step too far?

Put bluntly, it would be great if a book like this didn’t exist because the problem didn’t exist. This is a great book that sensitively, honestly, modestly and powerfully looks at a worldwide problem. It doesn’t claim to have all of the answers, it is not an instant solution in waiting. Yet it might just add a few more pieces to the puzzle and possibly help lead towards a solution being found. It deserves a much wider audience than what it probably will attract. It is essential reading.

Beautifully written, moving stores illustrate these complex cultural & policy issues

Beautifully written, moving stories about older workers in Japan, Sweden, France and the U.S. that illustrate compellingly the complex cultural and policy issues at hand. Having just left a major multi-national at the age of 50, after a 23 year career, the book was especially thought-provoking: on the one hand, I felt lucky that I was in better shape than many portrayed in the book, but I still felt a twinge of regret, wondering if my former employer was really doing as much as it could worldwide to take advantage of an older workforce. Regardless, I enjoyed the read because Joe is still a wonderful writer, 30 years after first met him in grad school. His style makes this a recommended read for a wide range of audiences, from policy-makers to consultants, to corporations and individuals, whether they're directly affected or simply just interested in this ticking time bomb.
