About the Author
Ernest Auerbach was president of Austin Opera from 2011 to 2013 and remains a trustee. He is a retired United States Army colonel whose subsequent assignments in law and management included Xerox, N.L. Industries, CIGNA, Andersen Consulting, New York Life, and AIG. He lives with his wife, Jeanette, in Austin, Texas.

Strengthen Your Non-Profit Leadership and Confidence with this Austin Story

If you have any involvement with non-profits, this is a no-nonsense guide for how to get out of and stay out of trouble. Most non-profits scrape to get by and live year to year, month to month or even day to day. Auerbach's work on the Austin Lyric Opera when it was in dire straits and his use of task groups to focus efforts and accomplish survival tasks quickly without completely alienating the traditional committees is worth the read alone. The fiscal controls to manage spending during the crisis and then controls to protect the "endowment" are essential to any organization relying on philanthropy. A must read for every board member and executive of a non-profit. At the end of the day, leadership, strong leadership, made the difference. Leaders act with more strength when they know what they are doing. You will act with more confidence after reading this book.

Timely and so very practical

This is a must reading for any executive who has a board (be it profit or not for profit) which has the same problems. Yesterday our "forum group" had an informal discussion with a young president of a corporation with an older and tired board of directors. Mr. Auerbach has provided the handbook for the solution to most of his challenges.

Mr Auerbach has written a very useful, practical guide of how to effectively serve on a board of a non-profit. His judgement and guidance will greatly benefit any board member looking to keep an organization fresh and financially healthy. A very helpful and enjoyable read.
