Refire! Don't Retire asks readers the all-important question: as you look at the years ahead, what can you do to make them satisfying and meaningful?
Ken Blanchard and Morton Shaevitz point out that some people see their later years as a time to endure rather than as an exciting opportunity. Both research and common sense confirm that people who embrace these years with energy and gusto—rather than withdrawing and waiting for things to happen—consistently make the rest of their lives the best of their lives.
In the trademark Ken Blanchard style, the authors tell the compelling story of Larry and Janice Sparks, who discover how to see each day as an opportunity to enhance their relationships, stimulate their minds, revitalize their bodies, and grow spiritually. As they learn to be open to new experiences, Larry and Janice rekindle passion in every area of their lives.
Readers will find humor, practical information, and profound wisdom in Refire! Don't Retire. Best of all, they will be inspired to make all the years ahead truly worth living.

Refire your life
By auskavitch
Too many people use age as an excuse to slow down, stop learning, and retire. You’ve got a lot more time and adventure in you than you think. Too many people just give in to time. Here, you have an outline to refiring emotionally, intellectually, physically, and spiritually.
This book is so full of thought provoking ideas, you’re not going to want to put it down. I know, I know, “I don’t like to read”. Well, fine. Get the book anyway and just go through the Pause, Reflect, Take Action questions at the end of each section. I guarantee you’ll have a number of “a-ha” moments.
Not thinking about retirement yet? Read it anyway. There are many doors waiting in your future (and present) besides the retirement door. Start your renewal now. Enhance relationships, stimulate minds, and revitalize bodies. You have the knowledge and ability in you, you just need some help pulling it out and putting it all together. Blanchard and Shaevitz are going to guide you.

I have some new ideas, Thanks to this book.
By R. McConaughy
What can you do to make the years ahead satisfying and meaningful? It's a critical question for those of us approaching retirement, but it's a worthwhile question to ask at any point in life.
Ken Blanchard brings his wealth of knowledgee related to productivity and Morton Shaevitz adds his expertise on aging. Then they put it together in a parable...one of history's most successful methods of sharing knowledge.
I'm 68. I'm still working at a couple of formal jobs but the day will come when I am not. That's when I will need to know the answer to what can be satisfying and meaningful. But I'm working on it now. Thanks to the recommendations in this book I have some new ideas, both for how to approach the question and for how to accomplish the goal defined by the question. The experts tell us we spend too much time worrying about how our finances are for retirement but not enough time figuring out what we are going to do.
Use this guide and figure it out. If you're thinking about or questioning the future this is a good read for you.

Stay away from the rocking chair! This book shows you how.
By JaneAnderson
In the year 2000, long before my own retirement age, I was introduced to a book by Bob Buford titled Half Time. Through that book I became hopeful of never having to retire to a rocking chair. I set my sights on the retirement adventure of retiring to, not retiring from. Fifteen years later, as I come closer to the golden age, I was totally enchanted by the story told by Ken Blanchard and Morton Shaevitz in their book Refire! Don’t Retire: Make the Rest of Your Life the Best of Your Life. Through skilled storytelling, the authors define keys to Refiring everyone can relate to. We are allowed to peer into the lives of individuals at this pivotal point through the pages of a book that reads like a novel, but the situations are anything but fiction. This book is the perfect weekend read, combining the education of a seminar in an easy to read parable style.
Their story opens with a wake-up call for Larry Sparks when his twin brother, Kevin, unexpectedly dies of a heart attack at the time of their 45th class reunion. Larry acknowledges how distant his brother was from relationships due to his over-achiever lifestyle. Kevin was a success and became rich in finances but was decrepitly poor in relationships. Kevin’s death had a huge impact on Larry and his wife, Janice. They were suddenly eager to find new purpose and vowed to Refire and add zest in every aspect of their life together. Through the book they are mentored by a former, respected teacher, Dr. Jeffery, and new friends they meet along the way who are already living the principles Larry and Janice are just learning. Throughout the book we meet people who are in the same season of life with a desire to continue to live full lives and not become dinosaurs.
Key One: Refiring Emotionally
Love, Relationships, and stepping outside the Ordinary is the part of the story where Larry and Janice revisit the definition of love, honestly sharing their feelings with each other, building relationships, accepting differences in others, being spontaneous, eating new foods, and even participating in completely unfamiliar activities. The story of Larry and Janice is woven into their relationships with each other, with neighbors and with friends. What would you do to nurture relationships?
Key Two: Refiring Intellectually
Intellectual growth is important. Dr. Jeffery reckons intellectual growth with the way oxygen is to a deep-sea diver. Without it, we die. Larry misses having an active role in running this company and Janice feels like her work has lost its spark. They know they are capable of taking on more challenges that will have significance, but they have to be mentally stimulated. Larry and Janice arrange to be mentored in learning current technology and using electronic gadgets. How can you assure you are aware of current technology and have a basic working knowledge of these tools?
Key Three: Refiring Physically
We all know that getting old is not for sissies and true to that cliché we come to the truths of what we learned in our thirties. Eating right, physical exercise, and taking care of our physical bodies is just as important as taking care of our relationships and staying mentally sharp. A new wake-up call occurs when Larry develops diabetes. Along with Dr. Jeffery, Larry and Janice relearn healthy habits which they share and use as another avenue of support for each other. We are introduced to friends Phil and Kelly who are going through a physical setback but as Kelly remarks, “Refiring is not just for the hale and hearty; it’s something you can do even if you’re not 100% well. So much of our health depends on attitude.” Is there an attitude getting in your way of living a Refired life?
Key Four: Refiring Spiritually
Nine months after meeting Dr. Jeffery and making commitments to Refire, Larry and Janice have changed many facets of their lives to adopt new habits, avoid boredom, and move outside their comfort levels to learn new things and try experiences they never would have, had they not taken on the Refire! Don’t Retire mindset. But they aren't done yet. They find a disparity between them about their beliefs in God or a higher power. Through Dr. Jeffery’s introductions, Larry and Janice meet a businessman who helps them understand the concept of God’s power, or having a higher power. They come to understand that they plan but God, or a higher power, is in control. EGO stands for Edging God Out or Everything Good is Outside – having that mindset is exhausting because it puts all achievements under the scrutiny of human emotions owned by people. Larry and Janice come from different places spiritually and they make important discoveries in this final section of the book. Where are you spiritually and what are your beliefs about how God, a higher power, and religion intersect?
In the first part of the book Larry and Janice form the Last Minute Gang. Their premise was to avoid the unimaginative life by being spontaneous. The rules were simple – don’t say no to new experiences, say yes to opportunities unless there was a good reason to say no, and adopt the nothing ordinary rule which is a commitment to uniqueness. One way Larry and Janice played this out was to take advantage of events and attractions in their own community like they were tourists instead of residents. They were surprised at the excitement they had doing things for the first time that had been right in front of them for years. As you will learn, being spontaneous was just the beginning of a lifestyle that never retires, because you have learned to Refire!
Don’t just read and forget. Each chapter has a documented Code of Conduct for living the principles, and then is followed by a summary Pause, Reflect, Take Action. This book takes readers on a journey where they are engaged in deeper understanding through practical applications and ideas to try on their own.
