The result is a concise, elegant argument that makes the scales drop from our eyes, regarding not only gangs like the Mafia and Mexican drug cartels, but the origins of the state, the vulnerability of democracies to racketeering, and the relentless reemergence of groups like ISIS and Boko Haram. In effect we go from gang to state and back again. In place of the partial approaches of neoliberal economics and conventional political anthropology, Hirschfeld offers a comprehensive and powerful new theory of organized politics as organized crime. About the Author

Katherine Hirschfeld is an associate professor at the University of Oklahoma, USA. She received her PhD in Anthropology from Emory University in 2001. Her research interests include the political economy of health, disease ecology and post-Soviet transitions. Among her previous publications figures the monograph Health, Politics and Revolution in Cuba since 1898 (2007).

Gangster States is a fascinating book that challenges many widely held assumptions about governance, markets, and organized crime. One of Hirschfeld's most compelling arguments is that there is an evolutionary continuum between organized crime and states. This does not mean that organized crime networks necessarily develop into states, or that all states emerge from racketeering, but under the right conditions this transition may occur. More broadly, Hirshfeld's analysis undermines any simple dichotomy between states and markets. She demonstrates that the two are always intertwined and that markets do not exist without some form of state intervention. Hirschfeld shifts the discussion to consider when and how states intervene and the particular sets of interests that are protected in this process.

Through out Gangster States Hirschfeld writes in a clear and compelling voice, and her arguments are supported by a number of interesting case studies from around the globe. Gangster States would work well in introductory anthropology and political science courses.

About the Author

Jeremy Moon is Professor and founding Director of the International Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility, Nottingham University Business School. He has held visiting positions at the European University Institute; McGill University; the University of Toronto; Churchill College, University of Cambridge; the Institute for Advanced Studies, Princeton; University of Manchester; Trinity College, University of Melbourne; and Copenhagen Business School.

Brief and well-done

Professor Moon provides a useful overview of corporate social responsibility. The genesis of CSR lies in the United States, but the professor considers its worldwide dissemination. Since he is in Great Britain, many of his examples of CSR come from Great Britain and Europe. He also adds specific examples from India; while he refers to China's embrace of CSR, he was less specific about CSR in China than he was about India. I did not find this surprising since the Communist Party will dictate the social responsibility of Chinese corporations.

This raises the question of: what is CSR? It is an effort to guide the behavior of businesses, principally multi-nationals, as their activities affect working conditions, the environment, education, and social conditions such as poverty and women's'rights. These efforts fall into the gaps between what national governments may regulate and what civil society deems necessary or appropriate. It is interesting that the author finds religious teachings frequently inform what civil society requires of businesses.

The author reviews the history of CSR, its goals, its methods, and its intellectual support. He also examines the detractors of CSR, principally Professor Friedman, but he expresses no sympathy for Friedman's argument. You should be aware that that Professor Moon fully supports CSR.

Personally, I can think of two examples of the effect of CSR. One occurred in Munich, Germany, in 2005, at a conference sponsored by Taurus Investments with MIT as a co- sponsor. The Taurus representative, a German, started the conference by saying that, while in the U.S., he had encountered the idea that businesses had a responsibility to "give back" to society and this was Taurus' effort to do so.

The second example occurred on a couple of occasions in Austin, Texas, at some business training courses, when I heard 30-somethings say they were pursuing this training because "I've started my non-profit and now I need to start my for profit" or words to this effect. The phrase "social camouflage" came to my mind.

Professor Moon considers these and other outcomes of CSR. I recommend his Introduction to this subject. Whether you agree that CSR is essential or not, I think that you will find the book rewarding.

Corporate Social Responsibility: A Very Short Introduction

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a topic that has generated significant interest among business practitioners and academicians in recent years. But despite the interest, there are different opinions about what this term really means and how it can be applied to constantly changing business environments and concerns of society and government. As the title indicates, the book by Jeremy Moon provides the reader with “A Very Short Introduction” to the topic “Corporate Social Responsibility.”
According to the book cover, the author is a Professor of Corporate Sustainability at the Copenhagen Business School and was the founding Director of the International Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility at Nottingham University Business School. In short, he is an authority on the subject matter. The author divided the book into an introduction and seven chapters. There is also a list of abbreviations at the beginning of the book and two additional lists – one of references and another of materials for further reading; these latter two lists are sorted by chapters, which allows the reader improved access to the information. Furthermore, Moon offers a well-developed index of key terms he used in this book and a list of 16 so-called “boxes.” The purpose of these boxes, which are highlighted in grey color and distributed throughout the chapters, is to summarize and emphasize the most important learning points about CSR.
Moon mentioned in the introduction that “Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been described as ‘an oxymoron’ by all too many dinner party pundits who are suspicious of business claims about its sociability.” He points to the profit-making ideas of corporations on the one hand and to the increasingly central role of business-society relationships on the other.
In Chapter 1, Moon provides various definitions of CSR, discusses who is involved in this business phenomenon, and describes recent developments of CSR. In the following chapters, he discusses frameworks for managing CSR on the company level (Chapter 2), past and current national and international developments of CSR (Chapter 3), and the institutionalization of CSR (Chapters 4 and 5). In the final two chapters, he presents critical perspectives about CSR from various points of views (Chapter 6) and then engages the reader in prospects and reflections about the economic, business, environmental, and social futures of CSR, including its limitations (Chapter 7).
The book is part of the “Very Short Introductions” series published by Oxford University Press. Downloaded this on my Kindle and did not regret it! As a 22 year old recent college grad, although I am not buying a house any time soon, being aware of the tips/advice the author had to offer was insightful. I thought it might be a fun idea for me to read this to get a better understanding of the home buying process and what to look for so that when the time does come, I won't be completely clueless.

What I liked about the read:
Format makes sense. It is neatly organized laying out, in order, the home buying process, with tips and definition throughout.
From everything to finances to getting the loan and best practices.

This book is all about best practices, and when buying a house, why wouldn't you want to do your due diligence? This is great for people who want to be informed buyers...It's like you Googling "tips for first home buying" and BAM, this book encompasses it all!

This book will help prepare you for the awesome process of buying your home.

Buying a home is one of the most complicated and financially stressful situations anyone can ever encounter. As I am sure you have heard the saying “Knowledge is power”, it could not be more true when it comes to buying a house. I am not a female, nor am I looking to purchase a house quite yet. However, I am in the process of renting an apartment and beginning to look at houses down the road. This book is laid out in a fashion that is organized and insightful. I enjoyed reading about the ‘Home Inspection’ part of things the most because it is a spot that many seem to miss out on. Having read quite a few books regarding buying a first home, this one includes unique details that I have not seen in others. Thank you for taking the time to write a helpful book that is original and helpful.

Men and women have different perspective when it comes to decision making, including buying a house. The author covers more than what I could think of. It is a handy book for first time female home buyers (and male home buyers too!) to learn what to look for and what to expect in each step of the process. The men can appreciate what are important to their better halves in buying a house. Very pleasant read.

Despite the importance and the vital role of food in tourism, number of good books and literature on the topic is still at large. This book has an expressive jacket with pictures that convey author’s point of view. The above quote of the author is true and is supported by logics and practical evidences. The recent decade has seen food tourism’s growth up to 30% a year with food tour of China, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and Turkey being the most popular. The book establishes the role of food in tourism beginning with the history of development of phenomenon. Differentiation of the terminology, especially where people confuse them, such as the differences between cuisine-tourism and food-tourism etc. have been explained well. It contains information of various concerning agencies and association with time and purpose of establishing, and their contributions in the respective fields of tourism development. This books is a thorough guide which after explaining the basic concepts and trends in tourism and food, explains in detail the process of analyzing, prerequisites, planning, establishing, marketing and the future of those branches of tourism business. The marketing part has been explained with pertinent examples of actual cases and the challenges, opportunities and options available to various types of food tourism business.
Almost certainly the authors have done a great contribution to the subject of food tourism but the geographical area, culture and the examples quoted in the book are focused on Five Eye i.e. Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. A MUST READ!

After reading What to do to Retire Successfully, I realize there is a whole lot more to retirement than the average person actually realizes. Will I have enough money? Will I want to stay living where I am right now? What will I do with my time now that I won't have a job to go to?

There are many things to reflect on, both before and after retirement, and this book will help you through many issues you may not have previously even thought about. Do you know any retirees who seem to be wasting their precious time? I do, and in order to make my retirement a wonderful experience, I've been lucky enough to read What to do to Retire Successfully so I'll be more prepared than before. I plan to follow many recommendations in this book and I'm grateful such a book is available in this day and age. There are so many decisions and believe me, retiring is not quite as easily accomplished these days. Things have changed dramatically and we're currently in the "interim" period where much is left up in the air and things are very unclear. This book will help guide you to (and through) retirement. It's a book you'll always want to keep on hand and refer to often. It's not only a MUST READ, but a KEEPER too! 5 Stars!

A worth while read on the crime of government and how to correct it.

This book is a fully comprehensive review of the crimes that is part and parcel of any and all governments.
It is a gathering force of information needed to unravel the Gordian knot that leads to the abuse of self serving and self sustaining government wasteful programs and sites ways and means to correct same.

Some of the sentence structures are a bit hard to understand, but I would highly recommend it to any one who wants a free unfettered life style that we can pass on to our most precious children.

Rest assured elected government officials WONT put these ideas into motion as it would be the end of their cushy artificial jobs.
Only educated people who arm themselves with such information will be able to throw off the yoke of government waste.

Outstanding effort

I read this on advice from a friend and came away genuinely impressed with the arguments Frisby puts up. The welfare lobby will reject the idea of genuine reform in the UK but its self evident that the current system is unworkable and financially doomed. Frisby gave a good analysis of the current situation and I think also gave some reasonable ideas of how to change it. Of course social upheaval would be a consequance of reducing the welfare state; but also positive change results. I am reminded of New Zealand which was suffering from a bloated welfare state and low productivity before budget emergency and a strong new government gave it the impetus to change, and it changed for the better. For the reader of this book I would treat it as floating some good thought bubbles to debate; and not getting too worked up about its dismissal of the left's sacred cows like the NHS. I hope someone in the position to make actual decisions reads it as it could do us all some good! I enjoyed Dominics writing style and its an enjoyable and thought provoking read. Definitely would recommend it to people interested in economics, at all ends of the political spectrum.

Only a comedian can explain the system that it is based on money printing.

Very nice and thought provoking book.
How goverment intervention twists even the best intented initiative.
His points on education are most valid. We dont need no goverment to educate our children.
His points are that the free market is dead when people and politicians alike do nothing more than lobby for legistation that makes rent seekers richer.
I should suggest the reader to pay extra attention to rent seekers that excuse themselves for ecological reasons especially imaginary threats like climate change.
Electricity is becoming a luxury in countries like germany that invest heavily on photovoltaics.
However his arguments against goverment paid health care should be read with causion.
Scandinavian countries that have a health based system with very big goverment inteventions have the highest life expentancy with the least cost.(At least compared to America and Britain)
On health care it is very important factor who has highjacked the goverment, and if goverment and state beraucracy is accountable to laws or citizens or not to tell if a goverment paid health works.
