I learned about Churchill because of my interest in WWII. I've used several of his quotes in my presentations. Even though this book is brief, It gives valuable insight of the character of this great leader. It's clear now more than ever why he was such an influential leader. Great book but more importantly, great history lesson.

Sales Propaganda

Disappointed that this is merely teaser material with no actionable steps other than to contact a consulting firm associated with the author. Absent the forward, introductions, letter from the author, etc, there are only about 60 pages of content, and it is basically a sales pamphlet for a consulting group. Definitely not recommended for anyone attempting to educate themselves rather than hire a consultant.

This is a great book for professionals with clients as company owners

Having read the book, I specifically note it is loaded with real world examples and practical insights into getting the exit planning process right. Peter Christman brings to the table a career of getting deals completed and knowing first hand how transactions can go awry. This book is his contribution to making the exit process understandable in the often exceedingly complex world of transactions. There are so many traps for the unwary, and so many ways for deals to "come of the rails;" that Mr. Christman's clear view is refreshing. This is a great book for professionals with clients as company owners; so that they may become a trusted advisor on the full range of issues. The book is also a good resource for business owners that are not aware of the difficulties (behavioral and technical) inherent in the succession planning process. I recommend this book unhesitatingly.

Living the dream using a 3 legged stool!

I felt that this book was like a "step by step" guide on how to live the dream. The ultimate dream of any entrepreneur or business owner, to build a business and then maximise the value before the business is sold. Not many of us consider what is happening from a personal perspective before we undergoe such a transition and the life after exit.

The 3 legged stool is a great analogy of the 3 pronged process that the master plan should take. If we don't consider all 3 areas then the success of the plan is flawed. As an entrepreneur that has successfully built and sold my business i could relate to the concept and examples that Peter Christman discusses. I wish I had of been able to have taken advantage of the wisdom in this book before my journey in this area. It probably would have made me more money and would have made me more content because I would have ironed out my personal and post exit objectives when I had a chance to do something about it.

Tobacco, and those whose livelihoods depended on it, shrugged off the Empire's collapse and pressed on into the twentieth century as an economic force any state or political power must reckon with.

Cosner explores the history of this golden leaf through the personal narratives of farmers, bureaucrats, and laborers, all struggling to build an independent and lucrative economic engine. Through conquest, rebellion, colonial and imperial schemes, and the eventual Communist revolution, Cuban tobacco and cigars became a luxury item that commanded loyalty that defied mere borders or embargoes. Ultimately, The Golden Leaf is a story of two carefully cultivated products: Cuban tobacco, and its lofty reputation.

Concise and accessible overview

Nice, concise overview of Cuba's colonial tobacco trade. I'm principally familiar with Virginia history, so this detailed snapshot of her major competitor's policies and practices was an entertaining counterbalance. Exceedingly well researched, I judge this as I judge any good history, by the notations and references which comprise the back half of the work, and they don't disappoint. For Anglocentric readers like me, Dr. Cosner places her subject in the greater context of the European colonial Atlantic world at large.

My father was a true role model----not only for our family, but also for our community and beyond. He made it out of the horrors of the Holocaust and went on the create and (re)build a legacy that not only was a legend in his lifetime, but that even now, almost 20 years later, still remains! I recently read a great book “Give or Take” by Adam Grant. He divides people into 2 categories, Givers and Takers. In reading his description of a Giver, he portrayed my father perfectly!

Barry Engel was born in 1928 in Tokay, Hungary---a pastoral town known for its wonderful vineyards and excellent wine. His boyhood was no different than that of any other boy growing up in Eastern Europe in the late 1920s and early 1930s. His family enjoyed a life of relative wealth and prominence. That is, until Hitler came to power in Germany and conquered country after country, eventually threatening even the world powers. By the time England and the United States intervened, 6 million Jews and millions of others had been murdered in the infamous death camps. Barry’s own father, Jeno (Jacob) Engel, had been rounded up in Budapest and sent to the Auschwitz Death Camp, from which he never returned.

After the Allies brought the Third Reich to its knees and liberated the camps, the survivors tried returning to their homes to start new lives. For most of them, this hope could not be realized, as they discovered they were not really welcome in their own countries either.

After attempting to settle in several countries, my father came to New York, with no money, language or family. (His mother and siblings would come later.) Years later, he would jokingly reminisce that even the clothes on his back, which he’d bought right before leaving Hungary, he had to throw out, because it made him look like a “Greenhorn”, which was a label that immigrants tried very hard to avoid.

My father was able to find a job on the Lower East Side, working for a spice-importing company called “Schoenfeld & Sons”. The owner of the company, Mr. Schoenfeld, encouraged him to go out on his own, so my father opened a spice shop in Brooklyn with his mother and eventually his younger brother. He told Mr. Schoenfeld that one day, he would bring in a million dollars a year in sales.

The goal of the book is to help you maximize your strengths while developing the actual skills you need to strengthen your own leadership and management abilities. As a start up entrepreneur I find myself as your student in every chapter of this book. (I'm not retiring yet... I'll just have to refer back to the last phase of this book later on in my life ;)
Your book has very powerful hands on techniques that combine business and interpersonal growth concepts. It's a relaxed read with realistic and doable steps to achieve set goals.
In my opinion this book is for every individual who wants to obtain success and is willing to go out of their comfort zone to do the work to reach prosperity.

Holly is currently the Director of Information Governance for AutoTrader. She brings a varied background to this still ambiguous discipline, including software development, medical research, data quality, data management, data strategy and customer service. Holly is responsible for defining and implementing a governance program that ensures trusted data that supports the business strategy while enabling innovation in this highly competitive market. Previously, Holly worked at a health care information solutions business where she was responsible for data strategy, management and architecture functions. She has been a board member for and has helped establish professional organizations that work to support and promote a better understanding of data governance. Holly has a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Auburn University. She continues to work towards simplifying data governance so that it can be more readily implemented and leveraged to improve our quality of life overall.

A spreadsheet is offered (for $10 purchase) to serve as a guide, which I intended (but could not manage) to purchase.
