Jon Mertz enjoys starting a robust conversation, interacting with thoughtful people, and offering what he can to engage in meaningful actions on how to lead and live in better ways. A farmer’s son, a political appointee during his twenties, and a marketing and business development leader over twenty-one years, Jon has worked in large and entrepreneurial companies like Deloitte, IBM, BMC Software, QuickArrow, and Corepoint Health. In 2014 and 2015, Trust Across America-Trust Around the World named Jon one of the Top 100 Thought Leaders for Trustworthy Business. Purpose Over Profit - Great Book for Inspiring New Leaders (Young and Old!)

I just recently finished reading Activate Leadership by Jon Mertz.
This book was written for millennial readers as a guide to inspiring their leadership potential, providing the road map that would help them step into their leadership, and prepare them to take action for the problems that they are certain to face. However, I consider it to be a great guide for ANYONE looking to revitalize their own leadership skills or needing some mentorship that may have been lacking earlier in life or in one's career.
I found Jon's comparing the millennial generation to aspens, with their amazing abilities to connect and support one another so they all thrive as a refreshing approach that was easy for me to grasp and understand. He packs quite a bit into 168 pages that are filled to the brim with relevant stories, including a few of his own, charts, and questions to help the reader move from one point to the next.
This is not one of those books you quickly read and set aside. This is one that you may want to read through once and than go back through it more carefully and work through each of the questions thoughtfully. Jon's purpose is clear in his approach. He doesn't want anyone to just read the information and forget it. He wants his readers to explore where they are and than formulate plans and strategies to take ACTION.
There are many interconnected messages woven throughout this pithy book. One that stood out the most for me as a message that needs to be shared loud and clear is this: PURPOSE OVER PROFIT. That's what sets the next generation apart from any other. Profit is no longer top dog. Purpose is. And the youngest generations have been showing us this is what matters to them.
I highly recommend this to not only millennials but to anyone looking to be inspired and needing to revamp their leadership and life approach.

the broad concepts allow for introspection and seem to be a good jumping off point for conversations with willing co-workers

This is an inspiring quick read written to encourage a generation of young managers to capitalize on the traits that Millennials share and turn that energy into productive, responsible leadership. The book is broken down into four truths (stride, collaborate, spur, and convert) allowing the reader to reflect on personal beliefs and experiences while considering the author’s advice gained through years of work and dialogue with young leaders. Some of the highlights include discussion on:
• “Leader’s Tempo” based on patience and consequence
• The roles of transparency, accountability, and collaboration
• Soul Sparks
• Tips for getting the most out of conversations with peers and mentors
At first, I will admit that I was skeptical of the strength of the Aspen metaphor, but was pleasantly surprised through his development of their truths. My criticism would be a preference to more comprehensive discussion on the concepts of pace and stride and his Absorb-Convert-Act Model. In addition, some of the examples felt a little too brief to pack enough punch to reinforce the topic. That said, the broad concepts allow for introspection and seem to be a good jumping off point for conversations with willing co-workers.
My heartiest recommendation of this book would not be to recent graduates, but rather to middle managers in small companies with some experience, who are looking for a chance to reflect on their work and return with a sense of renewal and purpose. If read prior to or during a group retreat, the material would be appropriate for a facilitated discussion in order to fill in company-specific details. Less experienced individuals would finish this book feeling good about their opportunities and have some tips for starting strong, but (to choose one topic) without knowing the long-term consequences of their work, might have difficultly in timing their stride.
A good book makes you think, and this one provides plenty of opportunities. Five stars if this book is in the hands of the right audience.

Great Resource!: Sure to spark ideas - both practical and inspirational - for leaders of all generations

As a millennial, I greatly benefited from Activate Leadership and highly recommend it! Jon Mertz provided me with a unique perspective through this book in a number of ways. First, he gives insights that can only be found from a leader with years of success and experience in multiple areas. Second, he is open to new sources of inspiration. Jon calls these "soul sparks" in the book, and his openness to learning new things makes this book feel like a great conversation from a trusted mentor. It would have been easy for a book to millennial leaders from an older leader to feel like a lecture; instead, however, Jon's openness, humility, and genuine respect for the coming generation flows throughout his entire book.
Jon's unique perspective gives us a resource that I haven't encountered before. It gave me sage wisdom from a leader who has been there to help me refine and leverage my strengths - and the strengths typically found in the millennial generation. It also opened a dialogue for me to have with others about how to communicate cross generationally. This is a valuable read and one that is very worthwhile. Wherever you are at in your leadership journey, you will glean a lot from this well-written and helpful book.
