Rich people have plenty of political influence. Why would they need to publicly demonstrate for lower taxes-and why would anyone who wasn't rich join the protest on their behalf?

Isaac William Martin shows that such protests long predate the Tea Party of our own time. Ever since the Sixteenth Amendment introduced a Federal income tax in 1913, rich Americans have protested new public policies that they thought would threaten their wealth. But while historians have taught us much about the conservative social movements that reshaped the Republican Party in the late 20th century, the story of protest movements explicitly designed to benefit the wealthy is still little known. Rich People's Movements is the first book to tell that story, tracking a series of protest movements that arose to challenge an expanding welfare state and progressive taxation. Drawing from a mix of anti-progressive ideas, the leaders of these movements organized scattered local constituencies into effective campaigns in the 1920s, 1950s, 1980s, and our own era. Martin shows how protesters on behalf of the rich appropriated the tactics used by the Left-from the Populists and Progressives of the early twentieth century to the feminists and anti-war activists of the 1950s and 1960s. He explores why the wealthy sometimes cut secret back-room deals and at other times protest in the public square. He also explains why people who are not rich have so often rallied to their cause.

U.C. Davis sociologist Martin (The Permanent Tax Revolt: How the Property Tax Transformed American Politics) recounts a century of efforts to repeal or sharply curtail the federal income tax, which was instituted in 1913. His book pays homage and is a worthy counterpart to Frances Fox Piven and Richard Cloward's classic Poor People's Movements. The anti-tax movement, which defined the rich as the constituency sought to benefit and which was led by community organizers from the right, borrowed methods of mobilizing local groups from such liberal causes as women's suffrage. While the anti-tax advocates never succeeded, they had a real impact when their cause was linked with related initiatives, such as a federal balanced-budget amendment. (In 1982, the Senate passed a constitutional amendment that combined the two proposals, but it wasn't backed by a two-thirds majority in the House, as is required for it to be enacted.) And the movement influenced tax legislation—especially laws advanced by Coolidge, Reagan, and G.W. Bush, who were all sympathetic to the cause. Reagan's 1981 tax cut, for example, reduced marginal rates for the wealthiest from 70% to 50%. Martin explores the movement's influence on the GOP during the past 30 years, noting that the party has come to be dominated by anti-tax campaigners and predicting that rich people's movements will continue to influence public policy... and perhaps even increase... the extremes of inequality in America. 6 b&w illus. Couldn't be more timely.

The author, who is successfully establishing for himself the implausible niche as the guy who writes compelling books about the history of American tax policy, couldn’t be more timely as the latest iteration of the anti-taxation movement has gained enough numbers in the House of Representatives to grind much of the usual business of Congress to a near halt. This book goes back to the debates that led to the Sixteenth Amendment and the beginning of mass income tax in this country. It traces the ebb and flow of efforts by the non-wealthy to cut taxes on the rich, including in 1960s California [of course!] the short lived ‘T Party’. It’s clear that the author originally intended to find a few dull, stodgy dupes of the rich and was surprised—and pleased—to discover much deeper history filled with a Dickensque cast with an array of motivations. (I suspect that adherents of Tea Party philosophies might wish that their predecessors were a little less colorful.)

This is an important book, well told. I suspect non-sociologists might be occasionally irked by what would feel like to them to be digressions when the storytelling is paused to analyze some bursts of quantitative data, such as the demographics of who supported which organization or the extent to which different corporate sectors contributed moneys. But these represent relatively few pages.

An easy and interesting read

Getting through most academic books is a real struggle -- even getting beyond the introductory chapter is often too much to bear. But this book read smoothly from start to finish, exposing the lesser-known history of rich people's activism in a way that is accessible to many audiences. If you're planning on being rich and politically active, want to know how to bring down the 1%, or are just looking for something informative and entertaining to read, look no further!

I bought this after reading and rereading Martin's previous book The Permanent Tax Revolt. I hope that Isaac Martin has more books in him on taxation politics/policy!

I found this book to be very well structured and written in an easy to read way. In short: when you start reading, you hardly can't stop.
With her indepth study and practical cases Antoinette shows you the ins and outs of how to become a leader with gravitas.
And for sure, this is not only applicable to a working environment, you can easily adapt this to your own more private needs as well.

As a non native English speaker i found this book easy understand hence I highly recommend it to a broader audience as well. It's a fun read with many personal stories.

p.s. As an NLP trainer myself I met Antoinette in person in London during an event where we briefly met. Only afterwards I found out she had written this great book. I can tell from my own experience she practices what she preaches !

Wow, what an absolute gem of a book, I had two significant realizations (light bulb moments!) just in the first chapter, such is the wisdom and insights in this book. Plus it's beautifully written. It's helpful if you have a started a business, but for those who don't, one way to keep earning is through investment. John North has compiled a great book, Everything You Know About Marketing Is Wrong!, that is perfectly aligned with the subtitle - How to Immediately Generate More Leads, Attract More Clients and Make More Money. The book is exceptionally well written and organized. John has the requisite background and experience to advice business owners about how to make smarter decisions about their marketing plans. In addition to being an accomplished entrepreneur and businessman, John has helped hundreds of clients over the past decade. In addition to the great information assembled for this book, John offers a half-day workshop for those who want to dig a bit deeper into the strategies they can use to market their businesses. Overall, I like the five step process that is unfolded to help the reader to think through how to build their business plan. On the other side of reality, there are the buyers of the services created by business owners. It is here that John does a good job to get the readers to step into the shoes of the buyer. His description of the psychology of buying and the stages that buyer go through is right one. As with most information about marketing, John believes that you’ve got to have a well-organized social-media marketing plan if you want your business to thrive. Interestingly enough, John also advises business owners to pick-up the pen to write their own stories about their business adventures. About the Author
Jeremy du Plessis, CMT, FSTA, trained as an automotive engineer, then an economist, but gave them both up to become a Technical Analyst. In 1983 he founded Indexia Research and pioneered the development of PC-based technical analysis software with the Indexia range of technical analysis systems. During the 1980s he developed a number of technical tools and indicators under the banner of Indexia, such as the Indexia Market Tracker and Indexia moving averages, which are still used in software to this day. He is an expert on Point and Figure charts, and the Indexia software was the first PC-based system to draw them correctly and clearly in the early 1980s. He lectures the Point and Figure module for the Society of Technical Analysts and sets the Point and Figure syllabus for the International Federation of Technical Analysts. He has taught Technical Analysis, and in particular Point and Figure, to thousands of professional traders and investors over the last 30 years. In 2001, after running Indexia Research for nearly 20 years, he agreed to merge the company with Updata Ltd, where he is now head of Technical Analysis and Product Development, and the designer of the Updata PC and smartphone technical analysis software. He is a Fellow of the Society of Technical Analysts (FSTA) in the UK, and a member of the American Market Technicians Association (MTA) as well as the American Association of Professional Technical Analysts (AAPTA). He is a holder of the Chartered Market Technician (CMT) designation awarded by the MTA. Jeremy is also the author of The Definitive Guide to Point and Figure.

Needlessly Complex

If you are a technician ( as I am ) , and enjoy the minutiae, the "hows and whys" of every detail on how P&F charts are created ( which I don't ) , the book might serve a purpose . If you strongly believe that overlaying RSI, Moving Averages, and Volume charts on a P&F chart to establish correlation is remotely meaningful, then this is the book for you !
This book feeds the theory of those who feel that there is some secret "system" to be found if you keep on adding more and more data.

This author's next book might as well be about correlating P&F to world events . I am writing this review to counter the positive reviews by others which encouraged me to cough up the dough for this overpriced book ...

Eliminate Market Noise

Point and Figure charting is appealing because it eliminates market noise and draws your attention to the trend. This is why P&F charts have been used since the 19th century. Of course technology has changed since the 19th century and traders no longer make Xs and Os on the back of trade tickets. They have computers to generate the charts and Jeremy do Plessis explains how to apply technology to P&F charts. Some of the applications are intuitive but Donchian channels, one of the most effective trend following systems ever published, are far from intuitive. This book explains a simple approach to implementing this strategy. There are also other strategies explained and every trader should be able to find ways to profits in this book.

A New Look at a 130-Year Old Technique

Point and Figure (P&F) is one of the oldest tools of technical analysis. It’s been used since at least the 1880s yet the technique works just as well today as it did 130 years ago. The basics of P&F haven’t changed over time but computers and software have allowed skilled analysts to derive more information from the columns of Xs and Os that are found on P&F charts. In this book, du Plessis demonstrates how to apply 20th century tools like Bollinger Bands®, Donchian channels and Welles Wilder’s parabolic stop and reverse strategy to P&F charts.

P&F works, probably because few people look at it. The techniques in this book can improve on the strategy and give traders an edge in the markets.

AN IGNITING FORCE TO SUCCESS
