Brave is the right title for this fine book by Margie Warrell.

At the end of her book, Brave, Margie Warrell tells us that she is well aware of her limitations as a writer, but if she waited until she had a Shakespearean command of the language, she would never write anything. She says, "And so I swallow my fear of falling short, embrace my vulnerability and continue typing ... reminding myself ... that done is better than perfect."

Margie has nothing to worry about. She is a fine writer and a good story teller. But so much more important than her writing skills is what she has to say and what she has to say is well worth reading - five stars worth in my opinion.

Margie tells us if we ask people about their biggest regret they would say: "I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me." That statement represents well what Margie's book is all about - helping us "step boldly in the direction of our dreams." To help us on our way she gives us fifty chapters and "50 every day acts of courage to thrive in work, love, and life."

In all fifty chapters Margie starts out with a theme for the chapter such as Focus on what You Want. Then she gives us a bit of biographical information about herself and her own understanding of this theme. From this point she provides sound words of wisdom such as "Energy flows where attention goes. Don't be an accomplice in your own misery." In each chapter she includes practice for her readers in a segment called Train the Brave. And lastly she often gives us a quote from the great masters who have much advice and counsel to give us on what it means to be Brave. For example, in this chapter the famous stoic philosopher Epictetus tells us to "First say to yourself what you would be, and then do what you have to do."

Brave is divided into five parts: 1. Live Purposefully; 2. Speak Bravely; 3. Work Passionately; 4. Dig Deep; and 5. Dare Boldly. I found much to like and learn from in each section of her book. This is not to say that Brave is perfect; it's not. I think Margie would be the first to agree with this statement, but remember what she says up front - Done is better than perfect! One example should suffice for the reader of this review. Margie tells us "that everything works out in the end." Sadly for Margie, what works out often has disastrous consequences as when her brother Peter killed himself after a life filled with sickness and suffering. Everything did not work out for Peter and many of us could give Margie similar examples where we simply can't explain or understand the suffering of those near and dear to us.

I, for one, don't need for Margie to be perfect. She is more than good enough just as she is. She lives with her own fears and is often tested to apply her words of wisdom to her own life. She is down in the trenches with the rest of us. She is someone we would all like to know, and better than that, have as a friend. Margie would be the first one to tell us how important it is to have a friend, someone who wants nothing but the best for us and who asks nothing in return. Margie would call this kind of friendship "paying it forward," and by that she means that the good that comes from this friendship lives on in the future, karma that never stops influencing the lives of others for good. As George Eliot tells us in Middlemarch, this type of friendship is like a stone thrown in the middle of a small pond; we see the waves radiate out to the farthest shore - such is the impact of the small acts of kindness of a true friend.

If you buy Margie's book, I don't think you will be disappointed.

Great Book!

This book truly helped me through a very hard time. The authors voice is so real and speaks right to the heart. I feel as though every person would be able to relate and benefit from Brave a recommend it to everyone!

A Guide For Facing Our Fears

It’s very rare to meet someone who does not want to improve their lives in some manner. The human spirit has this innate desire to grow and achieve. Yet for a large number of people, their hopes and dreams are just that. One of the primary reasons people fail to achieve their dreams is fear. Fear of failure, fear of rejection, of looking foolish … the list is endless. But if we hope to have any chance of achieving the life we long for, we need to learn ways to take action in the face of fear. We need to learn to be Brave.

Margie Warrell, author of Brave – 50 Everyday Acts of Courage to Thrive in Work, Love and Live, has written a comprehensive guide which will help us find the courage to face our fears and act with bravery to achieve our goals.

The book is divided into five parts: Part 1 – Live Purposefully; Part 2- Speak Bravely; Part 3 – Work Passionately; Part 4 – Dig Deep and Part 5 – Dare Boldly.

Part 1 is foundational. You should read part one in its entirety. It contains 10 essays on how to live your life on purpose. After that, the book can be read in any order. These lessons after part one do not necessarily build on each other in sequential order. They are all important and present a philosophy for living a purposeful life and understanding how fears pop up in all phases of our lives. Each essay deals with ways to act with bravery. At the end of each essay is a short “Train the Brave” text box with a short note on how to implement the lesson.
Ms. Warrell offers additional resources on her website that will help the reader learn to take action in the face of fear.

She writes in a very conversational style. She is from Australia so be warned that you will come across quite a few words that are spelled slightly different from the American spelling. And even though she has lived and worked in America, her writings still contain some references to her native land. She brings a great deal of real world experience to her writing. She has lived and worked in a number of different locations. Her writings are a reflection of her own growth journey. So she is sharing authentic lessons that she lived and worked through.

If you love quotations, you will find some real treasures scattered throughout the book. You will also find some very insightful one liners from the author, here is my favorite, “A curious mind will take you further than a clever one.”

Lack of talent, skills or resources is not what holds most people back. What holds most people back is fear of trying. This is a wonderful resource for learning to deal with the fears we all face.

About the Author

Andrea DeBruin-Parecki is nationally recognized for her work in the field of family literacy. She developed the Adult–Child Interactive Reading Inventory (ACIRI), a reliable and valid tool that measures the interactive reading skills of an adult and a child during storybook reading (available from Paul H. Brookes Publishing Co.). She has designed family literacy programs and has acted as a consultant across the country. In addition to the ACIRI, she created the Early Literacy Skills Assessment, a comprehensive, reliable, and valid tool in the form of a children's storybook that measures phonological awareness, the alphabetic principle, comprehension, and concepts about print. She has expertise in the areas of emergent literacy, assessment, literacy within at-risk and minority populations, and the motivation of at-risk populations. She was a Fulbright Senior Specialist in Guatemala. Her work related to literacy development in young children and families has been published and presented at national, regional, and state conferences.

Dr. van Kleeck's research focuses on language and emerging literacy skills in children who are language impaired as well as the broader group of children who are at risk academically. Some specific areas of interests include (a) parentsâ€™ language socialization processes in the home that provide their young children with foundations for later literacy and academic success, and (b) issues related to language assessment in the preschool population. Her most recent work focuses on what she refers to as the academic talk register in preschoolers, and itâ€™s importance to later academic achievement. Dr. van Kleeckâ€™s previous publications include several edited books, nearly 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, and 25 book chapters. She has given several hundred invited and peer-reviewed presentations nationally and internationally.

Dr. Gear teaches special education core courses: educational and diagnostic assessment, instructional methods, individual education programming, directed field experience, collaboration, and transitions. Before teaching at ODU, she taught diverse learners in grades PreK-12th, general and special education in public school, treatment programs, home-based instruction, as well as adult basic education. She has authored and co-authored book chapters and articles; presented at international, national, and regional conferences; is a member of the Council for Exceptional Children, including special interest divisions, and a member of the National Head Start Association. She is a reviewer for the National Head Start Association Dialog. She is a contributing author and researcher for the Virginia Early Childhood Policy Center, and the Teacher Immersion Residency Program at ODU. Her research goals include teacher and parent education to improve outcomes for children with disabilities.

Susan B. Neuman, Ed.D., is a professor in educational studies specializing in early literacy development. Previously, she directed the Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement. Her research and teaching interests include early childhood policy, curriculum, and early reading instruction from prekindergarten to Grade 3. In her role as Assistant Secretary, she established the Reading First program and the Early Reading First program and was responsible for the implementation of all activities in Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Act.

Dr. Barrueco is Assistant Professor of Psychology and Fellow of the Institute for Policy Research & Catholic Studies at The Catholic University of America. Dr. Barrueco specializes in the prevention and early intervention of developmental difficulties, particularly among language-minority, immigrant, and migrant children. Much of her grant-funded research has focused on early bilingual, socioemotional, and acculturative processes within the Latino community.

Throughout her training and career, Dr. Barrueco has been dedicated to learning and utilizing advanced statistics to advance scientific knowledge and practice with young immigrant children and families. This approach is rooted in a community-based participatory research framework involving strong collaborations with families and the local and national programs that serve them. This is reflected in her involvement in local and national studies with Head Start, Early Head Start, and Migrant and Seasonal Head Start as well as her appointments as Board Vice Chair of the DC Bilingual Public Charter School and on the Advisory Committee of the American Psychological Association Presidential Task Force on Immigration.

Michael D. Coyne, Ph.D., Professor, Special Education Program, Department of Educational Psychology, Neag School of Education, Unit 3064, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut 06269.

Michael Coyne is a professor of special education in the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut. He is also a research scientist at the Center for Behavioral Education and Research. His research focuses on beginning reading and early vocabulary instruction and intervention, school-based experimental research, multitiered or response to intervention systems of support, and effective practices for students with learning disabilities.

After 5 years of experience teaching in elementary schools in the Philadelphia area, David K. Dickinson, Ed.D., attended the Harvard Graduate School of Education and then served as Director of Teacher Education at the Child Study Department at Tufts University and joined the Education Department at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he received tenure. He moved to the Education Development Center (EDC) in 1994 to join the team that developed the Early Childhood Generalist certificate for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. In 1995 he established the New England Research Center on Head Start Quality, which examined the impact of Head Start on children's language and literacy development and on families, with special attention to the development of children whose first language is Spanish. He and Catherine Snow received the initial funding that launched the Home-School Study of Language and Literacy Development in 1987, and he directed the school portion of the study during the preschool years. Drawing on early results from this study, he and colleagues at EDC developed the Literacy Environment Enrichment Project, an approach to helping preschool teachers and their supervisors adopt more effective practices to support children's language and literacy. He and others at EDC are developing and researching a version of this program that will be delivered using the Internet in combination with interactive television. His work has been published in numerous articles, and he has edited two other books, Bridges to Literacy: Children, Families and Schools (Blackwell, 1994) and Handbook of Early Literacy Research (co-edited with Susan Neuman, Guilford Press, 2001). He and Miriam W. Smith are co-authors (with Angela Sangeorge & Louisa Anastasopoulos) of the Early Language and Literacy Classroom Observation Toolkit, Research Edition (Paul H. Brookes Publishing Co., 2002), a set of tools for evaluating the quality of literacy support in early childhood classrooms.

Roberta Michnick Golinkoff, Ph.D., H. Rodney Sharp Professor, School of Education, University of Delaware, Newark, Delaware 19716. Dr. Golinkoff conducts research in language acquisition, children's knowledge of geometric forms, and playful learning. Among her awards are a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, the Urie Bronfenbrenner Award for Lifetime Contribution to Developmental Psychology, and the Francis Alison award-the highest prize given to faculty at the University of Delaware. She is the author of 12 books and numerous journal articles and is committed to the dissemination of developmental science.

Excellent Guide

It is a competitive job market out there, and so it is imperative that job seekers keep up with the current hiring trends, and stay ahead of the game. It is that time of year where most hiring happens, and I wanted to make sure sure my resume was as good as it can be. I don’t have much experience, but this book was able to help me craft a mighty fine resume. Before I read this book, I had outdated ideas of how a resume should be constructed, and what types of things to include on it. Keeping design and brevity in mind, along with accompanying cover letter and online profile, I feel so much more confident about my chances of landing a job soon. Read this book if you want to stand out from the competition.

Great advice to help with any job application

A very adequate book to train anyone on how to create a perfect resume. I've struggled with this in the past, and know that I have great interviewing skills, if only I can make it through to that stage. But too often have I fallen at the first hurdle because my resume writing skills aren't good enough. Now I feel confident that I will make it all the way through any job application I go through, with the tips I've learned from this book. I particularly like the advice on customizing a resume to help it stand out, as well as the section on what to avoid when writing a resume.

It is valuable for individuals and groups interested in advocating for WSCC and for those engaged in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of this new approach.

The book also is a resource for both undergraduate and graduate students in courses that address a coordinated approach to school health. Each chapter includes application activities that engage students in translating their learning in the context of WSCC simulations. In addition, the School Health in Action feature provides case studies that demonstrate the impact school health programs are having in schools across the United States.

Applicable to both students and professionals, Promoting Health and Academic Success includes an appendix that presents a thorough guide to using school health assessment tools created by organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and the National Association of State Boards of Education. About the Author

David A. Birch, PhD, MCHES, is professor and chair of the department of health science at the University of Alabama. He is president-elect of the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) and is past president of the American Association for Health Education (AAHE). He has served on the board of directors of AAHE, the American School Health Association (ASHA), and the National Association of Health Education Centers (NAHEC) and on the board of trustees of the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE). Dr. Birch is cochair of the National Implementation Task Force for Accreditation in Health Education, a member of the Governing Council of the American Public Health Association, and a member of the board of directors of the Foundation for the Advancement for Health Education. He is chair of the editorial board of the Journal of School Health and a member of the editorial boards of Pedagogy in Health Promotion: The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and the American Journal of Health Studies. Dr. Birch is a charter fellow of AAHE and a fellow of ASHA. He has received the Eta Sigma Gamma Honor Award (2015), the SOPHE Presidential Citation (2012), the ASHA Outstanding Researcher Award (2010), AAHE Professional Service Award (2008), the AAHE Presidential Citation (2008, 2012, and 2013), and the ASHA Distinguished Service Award (1996). He was the 2008 Ann E. Nolte Scholar in Health Education at Illinois State University and a 2000 Robert D. Russell Scholar at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. As a faculty member at Indiana University, Dr. Birch received the Trustee’s Teaching Award and the Teaching Excellence Recognition Award. His research interests include professional preparation, professional leadership, and the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model.

Donna M. Videto, PhD, MCHES, is a professor of health at SUNY College at Cortland. She is a national leader in school health and has published articles on health education in several journals, written chapters in four books, and coauthored a book on assessment in health education. She has also made numerous presentations across the United States on health education and was given the 2012 New York AHPERD Amazing People Award for outstanding contributions and commitment to professional excellence. She became an American Association for Health Education fellow in 2012, and she has received several awards for her teaching. Videto is a member of the American School Health Association and the Society for Public Health Education.

Great Read.

Very well written. Ron Tank shares his personal story of loss and reaching out to God for help. Through his challenges Ron remained faithful and God allowed him to see a new way to invest in Wall Street. The outcome was significant financially and spiritually. Now, through this book, Ron Tank shares the message God gave to him to show others a specific way to invest in the market that aligns with a principal God has shown throughout His Word. A true story of redemption and God's abundance. Highly recommend if you are looking for a book to help you reach high gains in the financial markets.

Having faith in the stock market- a must read!

What a fascinating read-- I was never really into 'playing' in the stock market, just wasn't my thing. It just seemed really complicated, cumbersome and a lot like gambling. Yet I would say I'm a very spiritual person and believe in the law of attraction and believe in a higher power. This book truly got me very interested and a bit excited on how I could possibly start to 'play' in the stock marketing with Ron's guidance. Definitely pick this book up if you're interested in discovering how you can succeed in the stock market using some told of faith- thanks Ron!

A real how-to guide for strategy

This is a book based on sound research and the insight of experienced practitioners yet it is easy to read and user-friendly. The basic premise is that strategy often fails to engage management teams and connect with staff because it is either too oversimplified or too complicated. Cummings and Angwin have evaluated a lot of commonly used tools and looked at what works and have have put together a great tool kit for building real strategy that can be implemented. The Strategy builder uses some old tools but in new ways that aim to get real value from them by encouraging people to gather round and draw their strategy, physically linking the parts into a whole. If you have read enough spin about strategy pick up this book, read it then do it this this way next time. I am a management consultant specialising in strategy implementation and I can see that strategy developed this way has a better chance of really happening.

Genuine Humility; Gaining True Self-Confidence Without Becoming Arrogant or Selfish

In “Becoming the Best,” Northwestern award-winning professor and author, Harry Kraemer, Jr, draws on his deep experience in the corporate and private-equity worlds to provide insights and a guide for developing values-based leadership (VBL). Kraemer and Harvard’s Bill George (“Discover Your True North”) are antidotes to Stanford’s Jeffery Pfeffer who believes we should distrust leadership experts.

Kraemer rightly defines leadership as one’s ability to influence others by relating authentically to every individual with whom they come into contact. It is not about titles and organization charts. We intuitively know this as we have all seen ample examples of leadership in all spheres of life – family, faith, education, health, community, and career.

As a turn-around specialist at American Hospital Supply Corp (AHSC), I found that successful transformations were achieved mostly through the influence of informal leaders. It was incumbent on me to quickly identify the positive influencers (get rid of the negative influencers) and inspire them to be change-agents.

Kraemer’s formula for success in establishing VBL centers the application of four principles – self-reflection, balance, true self-confidence, and genuine humility – to the five key demands of VBL. These include:
• Being the best self: by actualizing who you are meant to become through reflection and introspection. “One needs to develop greater self-knowledge in order to positively influence and lead people.”
• Being the best team: by assuring that all team members understand and appreciate what they are doing, why they are doing it, and how that successfully integrates with the goals and objectives of the organization.
• Being the best partner: by forging win-win partnerships with vendors and suppliers in order to enhance the customer experience.
• Being the best investment: by focusing on generating a return for the owners through positive and meaningful actions that support the mission, vision, and values of the organization. As a best investment, one must commit to developing its greatest asset – its people.
• Being the best citizen: by focusing not only on success, but also significance, through social responsibility and making a difference in the world, beyond the organization and its people.

I learned first-hand about the rule of “best partner” early in my career when I managed a surgical instrument production facility in Fort Lauderdale for AHSC. I developed very close relationships with two critical vendors. It was a win-win for each party. I managed this operation for five years and as with most manufacturing operations, we had our share of hiccups. Both of these vendors worked late into the night and weekends to help me get back on schedule…..pro bono.

A subsequent general manager disregarded these important relationships and demanded unrealistic pricing (the impact of which was negligible on cost of goods). This led to a change of vendors and no support in the time of crisis which cost the facility many more times the savings achieved by cost-cutting. Vendor relationships, as Kraemer notes, must be evaluated holistically.

In “Becoming the Best,” Kramer notes in “The Best Investment” that the first crack in the culture usually appears at the top. It may start with something seemingly harmless, such as looking the other way when someone who is a strong performer does something that is inconsistent with the organizations values. Most of us with deep experience have seen the “protected” who are ‘sacred cows” and are unchecked cancers for an organization. I would also add that “at the top” is not limited to the executive team. I have seen increasing dysfunction at the board level in the past decade. VBL extends beyond the team a the top to the board. This is an area that is ripe for sunshine and organizational development.

Since I am a big advocate of self-reflection (I have journaled for over thirty years), I must include the excellent questions Kraemer provides for daily reflection. These are:
• What did I say I would do today?
• What am I proud of, and not proud of?
• How did I lead others and how did I follow others?
• If I had today to do over again, what would I change?
• If I am fortunate to have tomorrow, given what I’ve learned today, how will I act?
The benefits of exercises like this are realized only through daily practice.

“Becoming the Best” includes interviews with ten values-based leaders from diverse organizations, ranging from small to large, private to public, four-profit to not-four-profit, and domestic to global. It lays out a pathway from understanding to the practice of the VBL principles, and answers common questions Kraemer has been asked since the release of his best-selling book, “From Values to Action.”

• How do I develop a balanced perspective?
• How do I become truly self-confidence?
• How can I gain true self-confidence without being perceived as arrogant or selfish?
• What does genuine humility really mean?
• If I am generally humble, will I run the risk of not being noticed or passed over?
• Do I need both true self-confidence and genuine humility?

All proceeds from the sale of this book go to the “One Acre Fund,” which is a non-profit co-founded by one of Kraemer’s MBA students, Andrew Youn. “The One Acre Fund” employs the concept of shared value as explained by Harvard’s Michael Porter and Mark Kramer. It serves more than 200,000 farm families in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and other African countries. Kraemer is an active hands-on, “in-the-field “ participant.

Another great addition to my library as this book is a fantastic extension of "From Values to Action." Harry is able to communicate important information in a very approachable and informative way. The clear advice and real world examples make his points seem so intuitive. In this book, I found the "Best Team" very useful and a great reset to my mindset regarding teams and people.
